Jefferson InterProfessional Education Center (JCIPE)
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Jefferson InterProfessional Education Center (JCIPE), established in 2007. JCIPE is dedicated to improving patient care through implementing and evaluating patient-centered, interprofessional education throughout the Thomas Jefferson University curriculum. This includes preclinical/didactic education, clinical simulation, and clinical education within highly effective team-care settings working with our outpatient practices, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, affiliates and community partners. JCIPE serves as a coordinating body to facilitate the development and expansion of interprofessional education, faculty development, and evaluation across Thomas Jefferson University.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) put forth their vision statement for health professions education in 2003:i
All health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches and informatics.
The realities of our current health system include an aging population, increasing acuity, complexity and chronicity of illnesses, and an acute-care, hospital based model dependent on costly technologies. Additional IOM reportsii iii on health care safety and outcomes focused on the preparation of health care professionals as key to improving the quality of health care, including prevention and management of chronic disease.
JCIPE is consistent with the Institute of Medicine directives and the Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Mission Statement and strategic plan. The first bullet of our TJU Mission Statement is: "TJU is committed to educating professionals in a variety of disciplines who will form and lead the INTEGRATED (emphasis ours) healthcare delivery and research teams of tomorrow". One major goal of the TJU strategic plan under education is developing new curricula to educate integrated health care delivery teams.
Traditionally, health professionals are educated separately and practice in parallel or "in silos". Therefore, we often have a poor understanding of the role, expertise, and scope of practice of our colleagues. As we embark upon the mission of our new center, we are enthusiastic about developing a new model of evidence-based health care education which will ensure that each of our students will enter practice prepared to deliver team-based, effective, safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
