Q: At what times should PD be instructed to monitor her blood glucose levels?

A: The ADA recommends monitoring of blood glucose levels for all patients who are taking insulin. During dosage adjustments and periods of illness, patients should be instructed to monitor levels frequently. When treatment goals are met and insulin requirements are stable, intensive monitoring may not be necessary in patients with type 2 diabetes. Since PD exercises regularly, she should monitor her levels before intensive exercise to guard against hypoglycemic episodes.
