Q: What is your initial treatment plan to manage this patient’s hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia?

A: Because this patient is symptomatic, you decide to initially manage him with a sulfonylurea (glimepiride 2 mg/d) to rapidly decrease his blood glucose levels. You also start him on pravastatin 40 mg at night to address his elevated LDL and non-HDL cholesterol.
