Jefferson Medical College Alpha Omega Alpha Guide to Residency

Welcome to the rest of your life!

Choosing a specialty and applying to residency is probably both the most difficult and most exciting part of medical school. Whether you’re dreading the whole process, can’t wait to get started or are in complete denial that this is really going to happen to you (it is!), we hope these pages will be helpful. You will hear most of this information at meetings before your third- and fourth-years from the Student Affairs Office. This is just the information that we wished we’d had a little earlier or things that we maybe didn’t really understand until it was too late, that we thought we’d offer to those still looking forward to the process. These pages contain our first pass at this stuff, so if you have any suggestions or comments, let us know! Keep in mind that fees change annually. Numbers have been mentioned to give you a rough idea of how much you might have to budget to get through this process.

Along with information on scheduling of rotations, the residency application process, timelines, and interviews, you will also find a Residency Interview Survey, which includes advice, experiences, and thoughts from several students regarding the interview process for individual specialties. Remember that opinions are subjective and reflect only the views of the student filling out the survey!

Also, our recent graduates are happy to provide advice on any aspect of the residency process. For contact information (name and email) of recent alumni, please send an email to with the name of the residency program that interests you.

Happy reading and good luck!
