Gold Humanism Honor SocietyService Day 2010The first annual GHHS Service Day on August 1st, 2010 was a huge success! Forty members of the Class of 2014 selflessly volunteered their time during their busy lives the day before med school orientation. Activities included volunteering at homeless shelters, visiting with elderly patients, and learning important medical skills to teach their classmates. One highlight included an inspiring speech by Dr. George Brainard who reminded us all that, in medicine, humanism comes first. He also encouraged us to lead by example and continue to reach out to those less fortunate than us within our community. A second highlight was playing with our young Jeff MENTOR neighbors in competitive games of Toss-the-Water Balloon, Limbo, Tug-of-War, Wheel-barrel races, and many other exciting games. The afternoon concluded with an awards ceremony for our lucky winners. Special thanks to all the incoming 1st Years, GHHS members, and Drs. Rakel, Altshuler, and Brainard (and his wife Laine) for dedicating their time and altruism on this memorable day!
