Guide to the Clinical Years
Sub-InternshipsTwo 4-week sub-internships (Sub-Is) are required in the fourth year:
Sub-Is give you the chance to act as the doctor. You are given the responsibilities of an intern, but have fewer patients to follow. You will learn a great deal during these rotations and you will certainly gain a great deal of confidence. Many students use the Inpatient Sub-I as an opportunity to shine, and by doing so, hope to receive a letter of recommendation. For this reason, many students try to schedule the rotation early in the fourth year. At the same time, some students enjoy a Sub-I at the end of the fourth year to help with transition into residency. *Special Note - The Family Medicine Inpatient Sub-I has only 1 spot/block, so sign up early.
