Rotation Basics:

Grade:

  • IDEPT grade was based on the Take Home exam that is given out on the first day of the rotation, and due on the final Friday. It is also required that you turn in 4 brief resident evaluations on your presentation of patients you see in the ER.
What books/materials/white coat supplies do you need?
  • Students are given a Basic Ophthalmology textbook to keep, as well as the Wills Eye Manual and a book of cases on loan. Students are also lent an ophthalmoscope and do not need to have their own.
Student-suggested helpful hints:
  • You will be given the Take Home Test on the first day. DO NOT wait until the end of the rotation to get started on it because it is extensive. There are 15 case-based questions, and requires a considerable amount of time and research.
  • This rotation can be tricky in that the clinics are very specialized and there is not always much for a student to do. The more interest you show in the field, however, the more the residents will take time and show you how to use the instruments.
  • Take advantage of the ER time as this is the best opportunity to see patients on your own and present them to the residents. Be proactive and ask to see patients first.
