The new version of RefWork’s Write-N-Cite, version 3, eliminates the two document process that has confused so many. Write your manuscript in Word, insert citations using WNC III, click bibliography, your citations will be formatted in your chosen style within the same document, and you can continue to make changes without having to worry whether you’re using the right file.

The Americans With Disabilities Act swims in a vast sea of rules and regulations; information about them is updated each month in Thompson’s A.D.A. Compliance Guide. Also included is a monthly newsletter, and it often has items of interest to the medical community.

A news brief in the June issue notes that Rowan University, in South Jersey, held a recent Disability Awareness Day. The University president and a vice president for facilities operations were selected by students to spend the day in wheelchairs.

The Whit Online, Rowan’s independent student newspaper, covered the event in their May 1 edition. The day ended with a showing of the Academy Award winning documentary King Gimp, a film about the experiences of a young man with cerebral palsy. Jeffersonians can view it online on the AISR Media Server - just sign in with your campus key. You can also borrow it from the LRC in either DVD or VHS format.

The A.D.A. Compliance Guide is conveniently housed in our Reference Collection on the second floor of the library, under call number HD 7256 .U5 A191.

Have you ever entered an author’s last name, journal name and maybe a volume number or a couple of keywords into that PubMed general search box to retrieve a citation you already knew about only to get 0 hits? You may have even found your citation previously in a PubMed subject search so you know it’s GOT to be in there! Well, that kind of search failed because the old PubMed tried mapping your terms to the MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) thesaurus or it searched the Title, Abstract or Keywords of a record according to its Automatic Term Mapping (ATM) rules. Finding citations was best done using the “Single Citation Matcher” in the left sidebar. Now, however, everything has changed.

NLM (National Library of Medicine) has just implemented a major change to the ATM search algorithm (how search terms are interpreted in the background) for terms entered in the general search box. (You can view how your terms are interpreted by clicking the “Details” tab in PubMed after doing a search.

Instead of searching in MeSH, Title/Abstract or other keywords, your terms will now be searched in ALL FIELDS, including the journal name, author names, etc. These changes were made because a “significant” number of searches were being done for known citations. People were going to PubMed, entering an author name and a journal title (with no field qualifiers) and expecting to retrieve a particular citation. With PubMed’s old ATM, those searches were not successful.

There is one big caveat, however. With these changes, you will certainly retrieve MANY more references –and depending on your terms, many more IRRELEVANT references. The
NLM Technical bulletin notes the following:

New ATM retrieves more citations than old ATM and searchers may notice more citations in the retrieval (and saved search updates) that are not of interest. If you would like your retrieval to be more focused you may want to use search tags with certain terms (see PubMed Help: Search Field Descriptions and Tags), or try using Advanced search (currently available as a beta version) where you can specify fields for searching (see the article: NCBI Beta Version of Advanced Search Available).

So, in summary, you should now retrieve your known citation easily in the general PubMed search box with a few key pieces of information, like author name, journal name, volume, etc., instead of using Citation Matcher. If you are doing a targeted subject search, however, try using the Advanced Search option, where you can specify in what fields you want your term searched.
