Biographical
Note
Rosalind Lotta (Teschner) Solis-Cohen was born on 29 June 1903
to Issac Teschner, a prominent merchant of New York and Katie
Teschner. Rosalind, commonly called Rosebud, was raised in New
York and attended Hunter College (NY, NY) where she received her
BA in September 1922. Her later education included an MA in history
from Columbia University, an MS in education from the University
of Pennsylvania, and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
As a student she did extensive research on the educational content
of history in high schools and was a book review editor of the
Educational Outlook of the University of Pennsylvania. Rosebud
married Myer Solis-Cohen on 11 February 1925; they had one child,
Kathe Teschner Solis-Cohen, born 15 July 1926.
Rosebud Solis-Cohen was very active in Jewish and civic affairs
throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Philadelphia
County League of Women Voters and member and secretary of the
Women's Auxiliary of the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania.
She was actively involved in the Philadelphia Clean Streets Campaign,
which was part of the Civic Club of Philadelphia. She was also
a member of the Grace Aguilar Home Trust Fund Committee, which
was part of the National Council of Jewish Women. In 1929, Rosebud
served as the vice president of the Women's Federation of Synagogue
Organization. She was a member of the Congregation Mikveh Israel
Association as well as an associate editor and contributor of
the Beth-El Temple Scroll.
Rosebud was employed as a research analyst in the research unit
of Immigration and Naturalization Services at the Department of
Justice in Philadelphia. From 1940 to 1945 she did comprehensive
research on immigration and aliens for a job report, which was
finally entitled "The Exclusion of Aliens in the United States
on Medical Grounds."
Scope
and Contents
This collection includes personal (1911-ca. 1940) and professional
papers (ca. 1920-1949) of Rosebud (Teschner) Solis-Cohen. The
materials of her personal life include correspondence regarding
her early education (1914-1918) and letters of congratulations
on her marriage to Myer Solis-Cohen (1925-1926). Also included
are family genealogies of her family the Teschners. The personal
papers contain her immediate family papers (1925-ca. 1940) including
correspondence from Davis Solis-Cohen and the papers of her daughter,
Kathe Solis-Cohen, which consist of her education notebooks and
a few letters. Also contained in the personal papers are manuscripts
that relate to Rosebud's Jewish, social, and civic affairs (1918-1939).
The papers of her Jewish activities (1920-1931) detail her involvement
in the Jewish community center, the Women's Federation of Synagogue
Organization, the Religious Education Association, the Young Peoples
League of the United Synagogue Association, the National Council
of Jewish Women, the Mikveh Israel Association, and the Jewish
Welfare Board. The personal papers also contain the documents
relating to Rosebud's civic and social activities (1926-1939)
such as her work relating to public health on behalf of the Medical
Societies' Auxiliaries and the Civic Club of Philadelphia. Also
included are papers relating to the Philadelphia City Institute
Free Library and the Sesquicentennial International Exposition.
The professional papers contain documents relating to Rosebud's
continuing education and professional training (ca. 1920-1949)
and her professional activities (1940-1945). Included in the continuing
education and professional training are the papers relating to
her undergraduate and graduate work and Hunter College, University
of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. The papers detailing
her professional activities consist of documents that detail her
search for employment and her research report on immigrants and
aliens. Documents relating to history, art, and literature (1920-1939)
are also included within her professional papers such as Rosebud's
Hunter College notebook on art and news clippings on rare books.
This collection also contains material relating to Rosebud such
as photographs and pictorial works and memorabilia (1922-1944).
Included here is a message to Kathe Solis-Cohen recorded on a
phonograph disk and a picture of Rosebud.
