Medical & Scientific Encyclopedias

  • ADAM Medical Encyclopedia (MEDLINEplus) - The National Library of Medicine provides the popular Adam.com Health Illustrated Encyclopedia at its MEDLINEplus site. The encyclopedia covers more than 4,000 topics, including diseases and symptoms, treatments, surgery, tests and procedures, nutrition and anatomy.
  • EcoCyc: Encyclopedia of E. coli Genes and Metabolism (EcoCyc)
    A cooperative project of Pangea Systems Inc. and the Marine Biological Laboratory, EcoCyc describes the genes and intermediary metabolism of the bacterium E. coli.

General Encyclopedias

  • Britannica Concise (Yahoo)
    A searchable and browsable collection of authoritative references and images, with links to the American Heritage Dictionary, the World Fact Book and more. The full version of the Britannica Encyclopedia is available for a fee.
  • Encyclopedia.Com (Electric Library)
    This site contains a searchable database of over 14,000 articles from The Concise Columbia Encyclopedia, 3rd ed. Photographs and images are available to subscribers for a fee.
  • Information Please (Infoplease)
    The well-known Information Please Almanac is available, along with the 57,000 articles from Columbia Encyclopedia, 5th edition, a dictionary of 125,000 English words.

  • Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia
    Large open-content encyclopedia project. Anyone can edit, so be sure to evaluate the reliability of individual articles against other sources and by looking at the articles' history and discussion tabs.
