Biographical Note
An 1828 graduate of the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Joseph Pancoast (1805-1882) was the second Chairman of the Department of Surgery (1839-1841) and the fifth Chairman of the Department of Anatomy (1841-1874) at Jefferson Medical College. In the latter years of his life, Dr. Pancoast suffered greatly from ill health.
