World Wide Web

The software you are using to view this text is called an Internet Browser. The most widely used browsers are Netscape navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is called a browser because it allows you to browse through millions of pages of information on the Internet. The World Wide Web, and the graphical browser, is why the Internet has become so popular. It provides a simple user interface to knowledge, information and entertainment around the world.

When you start the browser program, it connects to a computer called a server. The server is connected to the Internet computer network and is like an electronic library and contains references to local information as well as information stored on thousands of computers connected to the Internet.
