Tarascon ePharmacopoeia

The Tarascon ePharmacopoeia is the PDA version of the well-known drug reference, the Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia, which is originally produced and peer reviewed by clinicians. The ePharmacopoeia, however, lacks some of the tables and illustrations found in its print counterpart.

The nomad of all PDA drug databases, the Tarascon ePharmacopoeia can't be found on its publisher's website and it has had more than one home. The first site to host it was Medscape, but it now resides on a MedicaLogic member's webpage.

Compared to other PDA drug databases, the ePharmacopoeia's interface is fairly easy to use. The symbols employed in the ePharmacopoiea are the same as those used in the Pocket Pharmacopoiea, so those not familiar with the print version may need to adjust to them. In addition, the ePharmacopoeia does not have an auto update feature like ePocrates Rx. Tarascon is also currently developing a prescription-writing feature, but this has already been promised for more than a year.

The Tarascon ePharmacopoeia is an excellent database for your PDA. It takes up little space, is easy to use, and works well as a quick reference, although it does lack some of the information other PDA resources provide--such as indications and contraindications. It supplements the larger PDA databases well, but is probably not as useful as a stand-alone resource.
