A 16-year old woman comes to her family doctor with a two week history of febrile illness and chest pain. On physical exam she has a erythematous, macular facial rash, and appeared to have warm and tender joints, particularly in her left wrist and elbow. There was a mild anemia and the platelet count was 60,000. The patient was hospitalized for further evaluation. An anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test was positive with a titer of 1:612.
