Digital Library - Acute Postoperative Pain Management

Introduction

Acute postoperative pain is a complex reaction to tissue injury, visceral distention, or disease. It is a manifestation of anatomic and psychological responses that result in an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Historically, health care professionals have given pain management a low priority, but recently there has developed an expanding awareness of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of pain. Much more attention is being focused on the management of pain in an effort to improve the quality of care and reduce morbidity.

In this talk I intend to review the fundamental concepts of the pathophysiology of acute pain, discuss the pharmacology of commonly used analgesics and their routes of administration, and briefly discuss other less commonly used modalities for the treatment of acute pain.
