IDEPT 470 COURSE OUTLINE
I. General Information
- Student Activities
- Day 1 - Orientation - Students scheduled for the Anesthesiology IDEPT 470 rotation at Jefferson University Hospital, Lankenau Hospital, and the Bryn Mawr Hospital should report to the Department of Anesthesia at Jefferson University Hospital, Room G 8490 at 8:00 AM for a 2-3 hour orientation to the practice of anesthesiology. During this orientation, students will receive their educational materials and have an introductory lecture presenting an overview of the practice of anesthesia and airway management. Following the didactic presentation, each student will have an opportunity to practice the following basic skills using mannequins: placement of oral and nasal airways, bag and mask ventilation, laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation, intravenous catheter insertion, and arterial puncture. Students scheduled to take the IDEPT 470 rotation at Geisinger Medical Center should report to Geisinger.
- For the remainder of the rotation, students should report to their assigned hospitals.
II. IDEPT 470 - THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
- Students scheduled for the IDEPT at Jefferson Hospital will receive their assignments during the Day 1 orientation. Students will be assigned to two attending anesthesiologists during week 1 and to the following anesthesia subspecialties during week 2: Acute Pain Management Service, Patient Testing Center, Obstetric Anesthesia, Cardiac Anesthesia.
- Clinical Responsibilities - Students will participate in patient care under the supervision of their anesthesia staff person. Students are expected to gain experience will the following procedures: bag and mask ventilation, tracheal intubation, intravenous catheter insertion.
- Didactic - Each student will receive a handout listing the dates and times of lectures for IDEPT 470 during the first day of their 6 week rotation. Students are to be excused from clinical responsibilities to attend all lectures. Be advised that lectures for all three specialties participating in IDEPT 470, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, and Urology, are given throughout the six week rotation.
- Required reading - Educational materials will be available to the student either as an paper handout or via the digital library section of the computer based learning web site for Anesthesiology IDEPT 470. All examination questions will be taken from information presented in this handout.
