Sample Letter to Request Permission to Reproduce Copyrighted Material

To request permission to photocopy copyrighted material, you must identify both the material and the extent of its intended use. Letters of request should be written on official University letterhead. AISR staff can help to identify copyright owners or to verify current addresses of publishers (send email to AskaLibrarian or call 215-503-8150 for assistance).

The following is a sample letter to a publisher requesting permission to copy:

Dear Sir/Madam:

I would like permission to photocopy the following material for use in my class, "[insert name of class here]," next semester:

Copyright: Any Book Co., 19xx

Material to be duplicated: Pages ___ to ___ (photocopies enclosed).
Type of reprint: photocopies
Number of copies to be distributed: _____
Distribution: The copies will be distributed only to students registered for the class listed above. The students will pay only the cost of the photocopying (or, there will be no charge to the students).
Use: These pages will be used as a supplement to the required textbook.
I have enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your convenience in replying to this request.
