- A. M. Best Company
The objective of Best's rating system is to evaluate the factors affecting
the overall performance of an insurance company in order to provide
their opinion of the company's financial strength, operating performance,
and ability to meet its obligations to policyholders. The procedure
includes quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the company's
financial condition and operating performance.
- The American Hospital
Directory (QuadraMed)
The free portion of this directory of over 6000 U.S. hospitals includes
address, number of beds, and medical services information provided
by the American Hospital Association (AHA). Basic financial information
for non-federal hospitals is provided by the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS). More detailed information, such as specialty
unit bed distribution, staffing statistics, or outpatient services
data, is available with a paid subscription.
- EdgarScan (PricewaterhouseCoopers)
Another source of SEC filing information. It has the added value of
an "initial offerings" section and a "benchmarking assistant" that
presents filing information in graphical form. Information may also
be downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet, or presented in a clickable
Web table. The site is provided free by PricewaterhouseCoopers Global
Technology Centre.

International 800
Forbes magazine selects businesses from all over the world and ranks
the 800 largest.
- FreeEdgar (Edgar
Online)
Provided as a commercial site. It is easier to use than the Securities
and Exchange Commission sites, describing the type of document filed,
and the company's Standard Industry Classification (SIC). An easy
to use list of "today's filings" is also provided.
- Hospital Report Cards (Consumer Reports)
Consumer Reports' overview of hospital evaluation sites, including what each covers and critical comments. As of this writing, the site was last updated in 2003 and contains four national and 10 state sites.
- Hoover's Online
A cyber product of a popular reference book. The free section of the
searchable site provides "Company Capsules" on U.S. and international
companies.
- Hospital
Web (Massachusetts General Hospital)
Contains over 1,000 U.S. hospitals with a web presence, arranged by
state and those that are national in scope have their own section.
- Researching
Companies on the Internet--A Tutorial (personal site)
An excellent piece of work that will help you locate information on
companies and their home pages, international business, sales prospects,
etc. It also covers financial information, and public opinion.
- Securities and Exchange
Commission
Contains a database of financial filings required of publicly traded
companies. It provides variant names of the company in its search.
- Thomas
Regional Directory Company
Provides buyers and specifiers in business, industry, government and
institutions with comprehensive product/service information on industrial
suppliers. You can also refine your search based on company type (manufacturer,
distributor, manufacturer's rep. and service company), geographic
location (state, city/county,area code), trade name, key words and
other specifications such as ISO 9000-certified, and minority and
woman-owned businesses. View supplier brochures, catalogs, line cards
and fax forms and contact suppliers directly via the Contact Company
feature.
- Yahoo Quote Service
A service of the popular search engine by the same name. You enter
the ticker symbol and get the stock price on a 15 minute delay . Only
for U.S. markets. It provides a Symbol Lookup if you don't know the
ticker symbol for a particular company.
