The Photoshop Phanatic: Photoshop Basics

Part 8: File Renaming using Batch Automation

In this installment of Photoshop Basics, we will take care of a common problem that occurs with digital cameras. Did you ever notice when loading images from your camera that the files are named with something crazy like DSC and some random sequential numbers? You can fix that annoyance by using one of the handy Batch Automation features available in Photoshop. Open your copy of Photoshop and follow along:

Batch Rename

  1. Open File Browser.
  2. Open the folder containing the files to be renamed.
  3. Click Automate, Batch Rename.

  1. Use the radio buttons to select your destination folder.
  2. Type the new file name for your images in the File Naming area.
  3. Click the OK button to begin the batch rename.

Experiment with this technique and enjoy.
