The quest for health information drives a large percentage of Internet
activity. In response to an increasing demand to acquire the computer
skills necessary to obtain this information, the Women's Health Source
(WHS), in conjunction with the experts at Academic Information
Services and Research (AISR) recently sponsored two programs on
Internet skills.
Betty Warner, Coordinator of Information Literacy, and Ann Koopman,
JEFFLINE Editor, teamed up to cover a spectrum of topics, from Internet
factoids and browser basics to plug-ins and bookmark management. As part
of the training web site
they created for the class, they identified top
sites for women's health and alternative medicine, and showed off some of
Jefferson Health System's disease and wellness information, including
new health videos.
Participants enjoyed the opportunities to use AISR's Learning
Resources Center electronic classroom to try out their new
knowledge firsthand. All enjoyed sharing their experiences and asking
questions over box lunches provided by the WHS.
In fact, the most common comment received in course evaluations was
"PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE!" Since both of the December workshops were
filled and even overflowing, it's likely the Women's Health Source will be
offering additional programs.
AISR has been collaborating with the WHS for over a year to provide a
lending library on site and information resources training for staff.
Patti Day, Health Educator for Women's Health Source, believes this
valuable partnership has "positively impacted the center's ability to
promote education on health and lifestyle issues to women of all ages."
