JEFFLINE's new Graduate Medical Education
Gateway is your Web-based road to
residency planning. Long in the planning, it is finally here and ready for
use by the 3rd and 4th year JMC Students in pursuit of the ideal residency.
The GME Gateway is the result of long-standing cooperation between Learning
Resources Center (LRC) staff at the Library, and the Office of Student
Affairs. As more and more residency tools moved to electronic form over
the last few years, it was perhaps inevitable that this type of coordinated
resource would emerge.

"Because of the excellent computer lab support available at Scott
Library, Jefferson has been an early adopter of new computer-based tools
such as AMA Frieda Online, AAMC ERAS and NRMP WebROLIC." |
When Clara
Callahan, Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs was looking
for an opportunity to expand the information resources for residency
planning in the library, it was natural for her to build on the existing
relationship with LRC staff.
"Gathering the resources from many unique organizations, associations, and
departments was a difficult and time consuming task at first because much
of it was paper," says Veronica Gornik. "However, as time went on,
residency-focused sites such as CareerMD and MedCareers became available.
Now, all of a sudden, there are not only Web-based applications for
searching, applying and matching but also ones which are providing content
for decision making."
The GME Gateway tailors residency information for JMC students in four
sections:
- a welcome from Dean Callahan,
- contact information for individual assistance,
- residency planning, and the
- application process
The residency planning section includes career planning information written
especially for Jeffersonians by the Office of Student Affairs, and a
timeline. As the Gateway grows, it will include Real Audio versions of
lectures and presentations to students. The application process section
provides access links to the external web resources for AMA Frieda Online,
AAMC ERAS and NRMP WebROLIC.
Of course, the Library continues to support residency planning with
printed catalogs from residency programs, printed materials on Reserve,
and specially-designated computers for use during the match process. But the
new Gateway should allow most preparatory work to be done via the Web, and
from any location. Even first and second year students who just want to
know what lies ahead of them can use the gateway for early planning.
