8 new medical students
40 or more infants and children
40 or more anxious parents and family members
Combine all ingredients every 4 weeks and stir.
Sounds like an easy recipe for stress. That's exactly why a team
of pediatricians and nurse practitioners met with AISR Education
Services staff to evaluate alternatives for making this short,
intensive learning experience better for everyone involved.
After reviewing existing alternatives with the pediatrics faculty,
Dr. Tony Frisby recommended developing a multimedia program designed
to demonstrate common errors and correct them with proper
techniques used in an infant physical history and examination. A
development team including several Education Services staff met
with Drs. Ruth Gottlieb and Lindsey Lane to identify the learning
objectives and desired outcomes.
Almost two years in development, The Patient Encounter II: Infant
History and Exam will be released this winter. Periodic formative
evaluation with student groups helped to ensure the product was on
target with the needs of the Pediatric Clerkship. Additionally,
this fall an alpha version of the program was exhibited at the
annual Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) meeting,
where it received very high praise from other pediatric faculty,
including clerkship and residency directors.
The CD-ROM program includes a large number of digitized video
encounters where students evaluate the interaction taking place
between the medical student, mother and baby.
Novice encounters are contrasted with those of an
experienced resident, so students can watch how differently the
outcome can be based on language, style and non-verbal cues.
If you would like to try out the program yourself, the Scott Library
Learning Resources Center has several copies of the CD available for use
inside the library. Questions or comments? Please contact Dr. Tony
