Are you sometimes frustrated when you need to locate a Web site, a person, or a department at Jefferson, but can't remember the URL and the search engine choices are bewildering? Here is a guide to campus search services, as of September 2001. Sometimes, you'll need more than one to do the job.
FINDING WEB PAGES
University Search with Google
The University search with Google is the most comprehensive search available. It covers all standard Web sites with tju.edu in their addresses.
Included: Most TJU departments, Kimmel Cancer Center, JEFFLINE, and main TJU pages.
Excluded: Pulse courses, organizations & modules, TJU Hospital pages, special databases or "private" sites.
Special notes: Google only refreshes its index once a month, so recently added pages won't show up for awhile.
Look for this search option as a button on the main TJU web page (http://www.tju.edu), as one of the available custom modules on your My Pulse page, and as one of the options on JEFFLINE's Advanced Search page.

TJU Hospital Search
The TJUH search page assumes use by the community. It provides three different types of information:
- consumer health information
- physician directory
- hospital Web pages (called "Programs and Services")
Included: TJU Hospital Web sites only
Excluded: University pages, Pulse contents, staff email and phone directories
Look for this search option as a button on the main Hospital page (http://www.jeffersonhospital.org), and as referrals from the main University and JEFFLINE search pages.

Pulse
Pulse offers several different search boxes. There is no comprehensive search of all Pulse materials. However, users may search the Course Catalog, or Organization names, titles & descriptions.
Pulse lets you select an optional module on your "My Pulse" page for "Search the Jefferson Web" -- the Google-driven search of University Web pages discussed above.
Finally, Pulse includes a "Search the Web" box on several pages, including the main Courses, Organizations and Services pages. This search feature takes you out to a general search of Google's over-one-billion-page site index. This is the largest index available online, and a favorite of AISR librarians.
Pulse's own pages aren't covered by the University search, but this is still a service under development.
JEFFLINE
Included: Web pages for the Library, AISR Education Services, Medical Media Services, and distance learning courses.
Excluded: Contents of special databases (like THOMCAT or MEDLINE), University departments, Pulse.
Special notes: The index is updated every Monday morning.

FINDING PEOPLE & DEPARTMENTS
Email systems and phones have evolved over time on campus. The many different directories can be confusing, but they all have different information. Links to all of these directories are available on the JEFFLINE Communication menu selection "Find People or Departments."
The
lock icon shows which resources are restricted to access by Jeffersonians only.
Some directories allow users to restrict information. The student address directory, for example, allows students to exclude their address, phone or photo from display. You enter only the information you want to be seen in the Pulse user directory. As a result, such a directory is not comprehensive.
If you're looking for people who used to be associated with Jefferson in the past, consider using PHDIL - the database of archival images. It documents individuals, buildings, and events from Jefferson's history.
View a table detailing the directories and their contents.
JEFFLINE keeps a list and description of all these directories, plus ways to find people over the Internet, under the Communication tab.
