XOR
How does the XOR Boolean operator work?

While performing a power search in THOMCAT, have you ever wondered how the Boolean operator XOR works?

The XOR operator is defined as:

"Known as the exclusive OR operator, a Boolean operator that returns a value of TRUE only if just one of its operands is TRUE. In contrast, an inclusive OR operator returns a value of TRUE if either or both of its operands are TRUE."

Source: http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/X/XOR_operator.html

For example, the XOR operator will retrieve records with either alcohol or narcotic, but not both terms. One or the other term must be in the record, but both terms cannot be in the same record. This operator will help narrow your search. This is how it would look like in a Ven Diagram.
