Is Yahoo 4U!?!
Occasionally I'm asked "How can I check my OpenMail account from somewhere else?" This happens frequently during holidays and vacations. The recommended way to do that outside the TJU campus is to use Outlook Express, but let's say you're visiting friends & relatives or in a public library and you can't set up Outlook Express to check your OpenMail account on that computer.
In these cases I would recommend getting a free email account from Yahoo and setting it up to read your OpenMail account. It's quick and easy to do. First, go to Yahoo! Mail at http://mail.yahoo.com/. If you do not have a Yahoo! Mail account, click Sign me up!
Once you've created your Yahoo account, you can set it up to read your OpenMail as a POP3 account. (Don't worry about what that means; you don't really need to know).
- On the left hand frame, go into the Options tab, and
- Under Mail Management, select Check Other (POP) Mail.
On the next screen, you will need to click the button for Add Mail Server. This resulting screen may look a little confusing, but don't be scared.
Enter the following information to check your OpenMail (mail.tju.edu) account:
- Mail Account Server = hpmail1.tju.edu
- Mail Account Username = Firstname Lastname
- Mail Account Password = Your OpenMail password
- Port Number = 110
You can keep it set to download to your Inbox, or you can create a different folder to download it to. If you keep the "Leave mail on POP server" box checked, it will still be there the next time you login to your OpenMail your usual way. You can also create and use filters to save it in different folders based on the sender, who you're sending it to, the Subject of the message or any text that appear in the body of the message.
As a final caveat, always make sure you Sign Out of your email account when you are done. If you don't, your wacky brother-in-law or the guy waiting (not so patiently) behind you at the public terminal could send a nasty message to the President as you and you'd be in a heap of hurt. This has been Kevin Johnson, signing out.
