AIDS Library
One in a series focusing on specialty libraries located near the TJU campus.

As the nation's first public lending library dedicated solely to the HIV epidemic, the AIDS Library is another Philadelphia first. The AIDS Library's tag line is "information for life" and since 1987, it has been addressing its mission by serving as a collector and disseminator of information and as a community center:

To improve access to health and support services, prevent HIV transmission, and raise the public awareness of HIV related issues:

  • The AIDS Library provides people in the Delaware Valley infected by HIV with information and support to make informed decision about their health and psychological well-being;

  • The AIDS Library shares information on HIV with caregivers, other AIDS service organizations, medical practitioners, case managers, hospitals, family members, partners, and friends of those infected with and affected by the virus; and

  • The AIDS Library offers education for the community at large to help stop the spread of HIV.
The serials list includes many hard-to-find information resources, including those written by and for healthcare professionals and those written by and for people with AIDS. Some Spanish language materials are also available. There are links to numerous publications and audiovisual materials on all aspects of AIDS, its history, prevention, treatment, and psycho-social impact.

The AIDS Library exists under the organizational umbrella of Philadelphia Fight, a comprehensive AIDS service organization providing primary care, consumer education, advocacy and research on potential treatments and vaccines.

Who can use the library?

The library is open to the public, however borrowing privileges are provided to residents of the 9 neighboring counties, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem in New Jersey. A library card is free at the AIDS Library. All you need is something that has your home address on it and a photo-ID. Books may be borrowed for 2 weeks and can be renewed; videos for 1 week. And you can renew over the phone!

TJU's connection the the AIDS library

Forum recognizes our own Jacquelyn Knuckle, Manager, Access Services as one of the hard-working volunteers who helped bring the AIDS Library catalog onto the world wide web. Many others have volunteered time to support the AIDS library, including Education Services Librarian, Eileen Stec.

For a detailed description of the online presence, see Fraser, A, Pierce, JB, Scipio, R. "Digital information evolution: the AIDS Library experience." Medical Reference Services Quarterly 18 (3): 15-27, 1999 Fall.
