This year, Jefferson's jointly sponsored Slice of Life Workshop/Computers in Healthcare Education Symposium was held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. There were over 270 registrants, 48 of whom were from outside the US -- almost as large as the showing last year at Jefferson. We had participants from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, St. Vincent, Switzerland, and The Netherlands.
Our program included 16 workshops, 24 platform presentations, 16 breakout sessions, 64 software demonstrations, 14 poster presentations as well as several social events. It is not too late to take advantage of the new educational technology that was presented -- just visit the official web site and download the abstracts. Here are a few tidbits to entice you...
For the practicing physician:
George Lundberg gave a keynote talk on the "Medical Internet". A pathologist by training, he was the Editor of JAMA. In 1999, after 17 years with the AMA, he became the Editor-in Chief of Medscape, a leading site for medical information on the net as well as founding Editor-in-Chief of both Medscape General Medicine and CBS HealthWatch.com.

Dr. Lundberg's keynote. Famed Slice of Life rubber chicken assured that all electronic equipment functioned flawlessly.

For the medical student:
Robert O'Connor, a third year medical student at University College Dublin in Ireland, created a wonderful site dedicated to cataloging medical mnemonics. This elegant, free, non-profit, online searchable database of medical mnemonics helps students remember the important details. (Example: "SEVEN UP", the path sperm takes in the male reproductive tract: Seminiferous tubules, Epididymis, Vas deferens, Ejaculatory duct, Nothing, Urethra, Penis.)
For the health science instructor:
Kim Whittlestone gave a presentation entitled, "The Educational Resources Web and Computer Aided Learning Reviews: an integrated web-based medical education environment for students at Cambridge University, UK." ERWeb and CAL Reviews were developed to provide an integrated and secure, learning environment, designed for clinical students and teaching staff. Their web site provides a catalog of peer reviewed educational multimedia resources.
For the instructional designer:
William Cole gave a keynote talk on "Cognitive Issues in Information Representation and Graphic Design." Learn why you shouldn't use red text on your web pages and other important principles of perception, thinking, and memory that bear on the design of multimedia educational systems.
The social events at "Slice" are almost as important as the auditorium presentations and demos -- a venue for continuing discussions with colleagues on the latest techniques and technology.

The traditional post meeting Extravaganza was held at Robert Redford's Sundance Resort where folks explored caves, rode the ski lift, hiked or just relaxed.

Some really adventurous souls even stayed on for a 5 day white water rafting trip on the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument.
Jefferson's Symposium joined forces with the University of Utah's Slice of Life Workshop two years ago when we held our first joint meeting in Tampa. We are indebted to Dr. Suzanne Stensaas of the University of Utah and her "Slice" staff for bringing these talented participants together. Thanks also go to Gold Standard Multimedia for managing the registration process, and web site.
Next year the Symposium will be held at the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany in August and will return to Jefferson in June, 2002. Please let me know if you would like to be added to the "Slice" mailing list (Rodney.B.Murray@mail.tju.edu).
